Cost of War

The tragic events that our nation endured on September 11, 2001, brought rise to one of America’s most controversial wars, coined by President George W. Bush as the War on Terror. According to the Mercatus Center citing the Congressional Research Service, over the course of fifteen years, the United States has spent over 1.7 trillion dollars to fund this now protracted engagement. American citizens and politicians, in particular, argue and focus on the magnitude of this number and tend to forget about the brave men and women who willingly sacrificed their lives to fight for our nation’s freedom.  To convey the true cost of war, I utilized the design of a receipt inscribed with all the names of fallen American heroes from the start of the conflict in 2001 to present day—with data provided by iCasualties.org. The receipt emits from a machine built entirely from recycled materials.
